  2. I don't have a phone—can you help me?
Unfortunately, we can only help you by phone. If there's a place you can receive calls, we will call you there. Access to a phone may also be important to reach the resources to which we will refer you. You may have a relative or advocate call on your behalf, if necessary.

  3. I've tried to call your phone line, but I can't get an answer. What's going on?
Our free phone line is very busy—thousands of people call us every year. Unfortunately, we cannot answer every call, but we do answer as many as possible. Our phone line has voice mail, so you can leave a message, and we will do our best to call you back. You can also order free written information by leaving a voice mail.

  5. Will Legal Voice represent me in my case?

Legal Voice only takes cases that will have a public impact—cases that will change the law or will affect a very large number of women. We do not have the resources to provide attorneys to represent women and men in their individual cases, so it is doubtful we will be able to take your case. However, we will do our best to direct you to resources that will be helpful.

  6. What if I need help and can't afford an attorney?
Many people today cannot afford to pay for an attorney, so we have put together an extensive list of other helpful resources that are free or low-cost. We also have information and court forms that can help you represent yourself in some circumstances. However, if we feel that having an attorney is very important to your case, we will try to help you figure out if there is a way you can afford any of the attorneys on our referral list. Otherwise, we will help you find other resources.

  7. Does Legal Voice ever help men?
Yes. While most of our callers are women, men are welcome to—and do—call our Legal Information & Referral telephone line. And some of our volunteers on the phone line are men. Legal Voice has also been involved in court cases in support of men when the outcome of the case will have an impact on laws that affect women.
