 Non-profit women’s legal advocacy organization seeks experienced attorney to co-manage litigation and legislative programs.

Position Status: Job may be part-time (75%) or full-time; to be negotiated with successful applicant.

Position Description        

Work to advance women's legal rights throughout Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Alaska and Montana, through litigation; legislative advocacy; education; coordination with community organizations and activists; and outreach to communities.  The Staff Counsel in this position has responsibility for maintaining expertise and overseeing Law Center advocacy work in the following subject matters: family law; violence against women; LGBT rights, especially with respect to family recognition. 

Responsibilities 

A.  Litigation    Work collaboratively with other staff Counsel, volunteer attorneys and coalition partners to develop and maintain the Law Center's litigation docket.  Coordinate case development and litigation in identified subject matters: 

  1. Identify, seek out, and initiate cases that will advance the legal rights of women, particularly those identified as focus populations, in attorney’s specific subject areas.  

  2. Manage the litigation handled by cooperating attorneys, including coordinating clients and cooperating attorneys; participating in the development of case strategy; assisting in research, writing and editing briefs, memoranda, etc.; ensuring that feminist jurisprudence is appropriately included and furthered and that the Law Center's goals and interests are being addressed and advanced; ensuring that the Law Center’s quality standards are met; and providing additional assistance as needed. 

  3. Maintain expertise in specified subject areas, with particular attention to emerging issues in women’s rights and to the intersection of feminist, racial and social justice jurisprudence. 

  4. Secure cooperating attorneys to handle cases, including preparing and monitoring retainer and cooperating attorney agreements, communicating with volunteer attorneys, and ensuring shared understanding of roles and responsibilities. 

  5. Screen requests for assistance from outside attorneys, the public, the Law Center’s Information and Referral phone line and other organizations. 

  6. Establish and maintain relationships with national, local and regional women’s and civil rights organizations to expand and enhance the movement for improving women’s legal rights; contact those and other organizations to request their participation as amici on Law Center cases; screen and assess requests for Law Center to join amicus briefs prepared by other organizations, work with organizations to draft and edit briefs and to ensure accurate representation of the Law Center's position. 

B.   Legislation   Work with other NWWLC Counsel, lobbyist, community coalition partners and volunteers to advance NWWLC mission. 

  1. Identify subjects appropriate for legislation; research and draft legislation. 

  2. Analyze bills; prepare Law Center comments, draft testimony, fact sheets or related materials in support of or opposition to proposed legislation. 

  3. Consult with Law Center lobbyist regarding legislative strategy and tactics. 

  4. Participate in coalitions, task forces and other groups aligned with the Law Center on legislative issues within subject areas. 

C.  Policy Development 

  1. Identify new and/or developing legal issues affecting women that the Law Center might address.

  2. Convene policy workgroup members to explore these new issues; lead workgroup in conducting research into the issues and developing strategic solutions, including potential litigation or legislative strategies, to advance women’s rights on the specified issues. 

  3. Recruit volunteer attorneys and other professionals to serve on policy workgroups; with Program Assistant, administer and coordinate workgroups. 

D.  Other 

  1. Supervision: In collaboration with other Program Directors, oversee the work of Program Assistant, including hiring, evaluating, and monitoring the work of the Assistant. 

  2. Advancing Feminist Scholarship: As appropriate, research and write on topics related to the attorney’s specified subject areas to add to feminist legal jurisprudence. 

  3. Law Student Intern Recruitment:  In collaboration with other Counsel, monitor law student intern recruiting; train, supervise and evaluate interns. 

  4. Provide technical support on litigation and legislation to attorneys, advocates, activists and other community partners throughout the region within areas of expertise. 

  5. Information and Referral Phone line:  In collaboration with other Counsel, serve as a resource to Lead Paralegal and I&R volunteers for substantive legal information, advice and strategy. 

  6. Community Outreach: Assist with Law Center outreach in collaboration with program staff, Board members or other volunteers, or at the request of the Executive Director, including

  • Representing the Law Center on various coalitions
  • Preparing press releases and responding to media requests and inquiries
  • Providing public presentations on legal issues to community groups, law classes or others
  • Writing articles for print and e-newsletters, annual reports etc;
  • Acting as a legal resource to community organizations, attorneys, and others

  7. Miscellaneous

  • At the request of the Executive Director, and in collaboration with other program staff, assist with the drafting and editing of grant proposals and reports
  • Provide written monthly reports to the Executive Director  
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications

1. J.D. from an accredited law school, with a minimum of three years of legal experience; trial/litigation experience preferred. 

2. Substantial knowledge of, or experience in, legislative advocacy, such as lobbying, coordinating legislative activity, policy analysis or other legislative work, preferably in at least one of the five states in the Northwest. 

3. Experience in at least one of the following: family law, violence against women, lesbian and gay rights; preferably with particular knowledge of issues affecting women of color, immigrant and non-English-speaking women. 

4. A demonstrated commitment to advancing and protecting legal rights for women. 

5. Experience or familiarity with the Law Center or other non-profit, community-based service delivery organizations. 

6. Admission to the state bar of Washington, Idaho, Alaska, Montana or Oregon.  

 

Development Officer  

Under the direction of the Director of Development and in collaboration with the Director of Administration and Events, the Development Officer manages the agency database, membership and fundraising records, and provides primary administrative and other support to all development components of the Law Center, including major gifts, annual campaign, direct mail, telemarketing, and special events.

Reports to: Director of Development 

Position Status: Non-Exempt; Full Time (40 hrs/week) 

Compensation: Salary $34K-$38K, DOQ, with excellent benefits.

Responsibilities


1. Database Management and Reporting

  • Maintain Law Center database and ensure accuracy and currency of records, under the direction of the Director of Development.
  • Process, record and track gifts, pledges and event revenue in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and track timely and accurate donor acknowledgements, pledge reminders and correspondence.
  • Generate monthly and YTD reports on specific campaigns and contributions.
  • Develop and execute a plan for regular database cleanup.


2. Event Coordination

  • Assist the Director of Administration and Events in special event implementation, including registration, donation tracking and auction item processing. 
  • Work with Volunteer Coordinator to recruit, train and coordinate fundraising volunteers for events.
  • Provide administrative support for donor cultivation and stewardship events.

 3. External Communications

  • Coordinating with staff, design and implement Convio messages to online activist community.
  • Plan and execute both e-newsletter and print newsletter.
  • With the Director of Development, organize the creation and execution of annual report.
  • Update website as necessary.
  • Upload new supporters from the Convio database to the donor database as necessary. 

 4. Direct Mail and Telefunding: Donor Solicitation and Cultivation

  • Draft annual giving solicitations, direct mail, donor acknowledgments and cultivation. Oversee and manage direct mail vendor and/or list exchange with like-minded organization for mail campaigns. Track campaigns and evaluate success.
  • Assist in stewarding new constituents.

5. Workplace Giving

  • Ensure the timely completion of federal, state and local workplace applications.
  • Attend local workplace events, as appropriate.
  • Assist in stewarding workplace donors.

6. General Development/Fundraising

  • Assist with all aspects of fundraising, as assigned. In addition to responsibilities listed above, these may include, but may not be limited to donor relations and corporate sponsorship.
  • Provide quality customer service to constituents and maintain positive working relationships with staff, volunteers, board, donors and community supporters. 
  • With the Director of Development, assist in developing work plan for the year.

Qualifications

  • B.A. or B.S. Minimum 2 years of nonprofit development experience
  • Prior use of a fundraising database; experience with FileMaker a plus
  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills
  • Good attention to detail
  • Ability to successfully prioritize and complete competing projects
  • Ability to create and execute timelines and work plans
  • Professional demeanor
  • Ability to relate to and work with diverse constituencies

1. Serves as first contact with the Law Center to telephone callers and visitors.

2. Collects records and distributes daily mail and daily mail receipts.

3. Keeps inventory and orders office supplies (including supplies for copier, printers and fax machine).

4. Maintains office machines and service contacts.

5. Administrative duties including maintaining committee rosters; overseeing office photo copying projects; responding to general email inquiries.

6. Prepare and track payments to vendors and contractors, under the supervision of the Director of Administration and Events.

7. Keeps inventory of, and responds to requests for, Law Center publications.

8. Coordinates office and event volunteers. Responds to volunteer requests.

9. As time permits, provides skilled administrative support to the Executive Director and senior staff, including calendar and meeting management, travel coordination, preparing executive correspondence, and assistance with special projects.

10. Assists in special events implementation.

11. Maintains publication archives.

12. Collects and maintains media archive.

13. Other duties as determined by the Director of Administration.
