As women, it is time to frame our issues as human rights, not privileges that can be given and taken. These rights apply to all women. Thanks for making them a reality! *Vanessa, a Law Center supporter ABOUT US The Northwest Women’s Law Center started with a gender equity in sports case, Blair v. WSU, in which women and coaches were trying to achieve equal access to sports facilities and programs. Since that first case in 1978, the Law Center, often with coalition partners, has fought to strengthen the law for victims of domestic violence; pursued marriage and relationship recognition rights for lesbians and gays; battled discrimination in the workplace; advanced access to healthcare and choice; and worked to protect women and their families. ABOUT OUR PROGRAMS We are effective because we work to change the law through both litigation and advocacy. The Northwest Women’s Law Center brings public impact cases throughout the Northwest, participates as amicus curiae in cases affecting women throughout the nation, and provides technical assistance in litigation and legislation to organizations and attorneys in Montana, Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and Alaska. Working with lawmakers and advocates, the Law Center drafts legislation, analyzes bills and testifies about proposed legislation affecting women in Washington state, and provides technical assistance and model legislation on selected issues to advocates and activists throughout the region. Our ability to combine ground-breaking litigation with advocacy ensures that women’s rights and women’s issues are addressed in the most efficient and effective way: we’ll do what it takes to improve the social, legal and economic status of women. We believe that giving people information about their legal rights empowers them to make decisions and advocate for themselves and their families. Our Legal Information and Referral (I&R) telephone line provides resources to women and men in our community. To learn more about the I&R line and the resources we provide on the web, click here.
